From mid February we stayed for almost one month in the small and remote town 'Český Krumlov' in Czech Republic, where we were involved in the organization of the fifth Workshop on Molecular Evolution.
Český Krumlov is a very pretty town in the southern Bohemian region of Czech Republic, and its old town center with the impressive late 13th century castle is listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Here are some impressions of the houses in the old town center:
Český Krumlov is also home to the Egon Schiele Art Centrum, which exhibits work of the Austrian painter Egon Schiele, but also classical and contemporary 20th century art with outside installations and street art. The Hradební Street tucked away behind the Art Centrum is not a street the common tourist would enter. It appears like a hidden world that contrasts the touristic old town and a lot of the street paintings address or criticize tourism and touristic photography.
The vast amount of our time we spend in either the Theater - converted to our lecture hall, the House of the Prelate - which we used as computer lab, and the numerous restaurants, bars, and pubs. However, sometimes there were also some minutes in which we had time to visit the castle, the castle tower, the castle's famous Baroque theater, wander around the hidden streets, ...
... and visit weird art in the castles's cellars.
The next four pictures show again the tourists' favorite, the castle tower, and street art of the Hradební street.
The text next to the fish translates to: birthday, name day, birthday, funeral.
We were regular customers of hot chocolate, fresh ginger tea, and coffee in the various coffee places to treat colds and fatigue, and also felt that the sofas made an excellent replacement of office chairs.. .
Some of the night-shots below are from České Budějovice, a city half an hour north of Český Krumlov best known for brewing the famous 'Budweiser' beer! We visited České Budějovice on Sunday evening to check out the local climbing gym and get some Indian food for a change :)
A special present from the tourism office to the workshop organizers was a vintage photo shoot at the atelier Seidel in Český Krumlov. We all got dressed up in 1905 clothes and equipped with little details like cigars or umbrellas. We had that much fun that we went later on again with an even larger group also involving some of the students.
It was really cool to spend such a long time at this very special place with such special people and a great workshop team!
